Alkmaar
An intact historic centre of listed buildings and leaded lights, and beyond it roomy post-war districts with simpler frames and more glass per home.

A small historic centre ringed by 1970s-to-1990s estates: terraced houses with standard frames, and in Weidevenne new-build with a good deal of glazing upstairs.

Post-war reconstruction in the centre, towers of floor-to-ceiling glass on the Kop van Zuid, 1930s walk-ups in Blijdorp and detached villas with a lot of glazing in Hillegersberg.

Schiedam
A historic centre of distilleries and the tallest windmills in the country, ringed by post-war walk-up flats in Nieuwland and Groenoord, and roomier family homes in Woudhoek and Spaland.

Zaanstad
Wooden Zaan houses with small glazing bars along the river, and beside them the Inverdan new-build with large fixed panes. The old timber needs a gentle hand, the new glazing needs height.

Zoetermeer
A planned overspill town: district after district built from 1970 onwards, each with near-identical house types and frame sizes. Few surprises, a lot of repetition.
