Paving goes green in the shade and on the north side, and in Utrecht typically fastest under a tree or along a fence the sun never reaches. What grows there is a mixture of algae, moss and black film, and it sits not only on the slab but mostly in the joint.
Pressure washing always takes some jointing sand with it. That is not a mistake, that is physics — but what happens next is the difference. A joint that has been blasted empty fills with weeds within one season and lets slabs rock and sink. So after cleaning we top the joints back up with fresh sand and brush it in. It costs us an extra half hour and saves you years.
Natural stone, clay pavers and concrete each want different pressures and sometimes an entirely different approach. Soft natural stone can pit under high pressure; there we use a flat-surface cleaner at low pressure, or a product that kills the growth and lets the rain do the work. Which of the three it will be is something we say at the survey, not halfway through.

Questions about patios & paving
Will pressure washing damage my paving?
Concrete and clay pavers take high pressure perfectly well. Soft natural stone and old, weathered slabs do not always: they can pit or roughen, and rough slabs then go green faster than before. So we set the pressure per substrate and clean one slab first.
Do I have to top up the jointing sand myself?
No, it is in our price. It is the step many firms skip because it shows nothing on the day, but an emptied joint is exactly why a patio is full of weeds within two years and slabs start to sink.
Can it be combined with the facade or the gutter?
Yes, and it is almost always cheaper. The machine is there anyway, and the rinse water off the facade lands on the patio regardless — so doing it in that order saves you a second call-out and a second clear-up.
